'50 Wigs: Problems' by Kate Pelling (2025, 06:37 Mins.) is part of a series of works examining the successes and failures of collections and community. The 50 wigs were collected by the artist over many years and most of them have appeared in previous video works. The wigs provide layered narratives within the work as well as acting as an absurd kind of ‘community’. For '50 Wigs: Problems’, the artist collected 50 current problems from friends, family and social media. With each new wig, the artist states a problem – attempting not to react or respond, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. It is an exercise in trust, especially as the problems are only greeted with a kind of wig-therapy. However the video also examines who should take responsibility for each issue - and surely it is a mistake to impose ethical responsibility on an individual, when often the issue is a deflection from a dysfunctional society.
